How to donate to Conrad — and how to do it safely

Thank you. Every message we have received asking "how do I help?" has meant a great deal to our family. ❤️

Here is everything you need, in one place.

The simplest and safest way: BackaBuddy

You can donate directly through the official campaign using EFT, credit card, or PayPal:

Please check the web address carefully before you pay. Lookalike addresses that differ by a single character are one of the most common ways donors are caught out.

Two small things worth knowing:

📌 The "Tip" field. BackaBuddy offers you the option of adding a tip to support their platform. To be clear about how this works: the tip is added on top of your donation, not taken out of it. Conrad receives your full amount either way. It is entirely optional — if you would prefer not to add it, simply set it to R0.

📌 Payment fees. Different payment methods carry different processing fees, which do reduce the final amount available for Conrad's treatment. If you are in South Africa, EFT is the most cost-effective option for both you and for us.

Donating offline, by direct EFT

Some people have asked to pay directly rather than through the platform.

Direct EFT is arranged only through our established family and friends network — people who already know us personally and already have our numbers. If that is you, please contact us the way you always have: a phone call or a WhatsApp message.

If you are not part of that chain, we ask that you please donate through BackaBuddy instead. This is not us turning help away. It is the only way we can be certain that what you give reaches Conrad and not someone impersonating our family.

We do not conduct donation arrangements over Facebook. Not through comments, not through Messenger, not through a profile that appears to be one of us. Social media accounts are hacked and impersonated far too easily, and a message from "someone you know" is one of the simplest things in the world to fake. If you receive a Facebook message from any of us asking for money or sending banking details, it is not us.

We also do not publish banking details or personal contact numbers anywhere online — not here, not on the website, not in the comments. Ever.

Always verify, twice

If you are arranging a direct payment, please confirm you are speaking to the right person using two separate methodsbefore any money moves. For example:

  • A WhatsApp or Signal message, then a phone call

  • An email, then a voice call

  • Or simply check with another close family member you already know

Verify the second time using contact details you already had, not ones supplied in the message in front of you. It may feel overly cautious. It isn't — and none of us will be offended by it. We would far rather you checked.

If you are unsure at any point, use BackaBuddy. That is what it is there for.
